A White-tailed Jackrabbit track left in the fresh snow. Note that the smaller prints are from the forelegs while the larger ones are from the rear, but the animal was traveling from left to right. The front feet come down first, followed by the hind. Unfortunately we didn’t see any of the animals, but there were little rabbit highways in the snow all over the place in the area we were walking. There must be a lot of rabbits in that area at some times during the day!
I saw this big Buck standing in a farm field watching me as I drove past, and I really wanted to make a great portrait of him. Unfortunately the whole herd of Deer took off running shortly after I stopped. It was already past sunset and really quite dark, so my shutter speeds were very slow. Instead of trying to make really sharp images I worked on making some pan-blurs (where the background is blurred by panning along while the main subject moves, keeping the subject relatively sharper) as they ran past me instead. I really like the granularity of the final image and to me it has a great vintage look and feel.
Sometimes you get the shot you want, sometimes they stick their tongue out at you!
I was on my way out of Inglewood Bird Sanctuary when a Mule Deer Doe and two fawns crossed the path in front of me. The fawns were very cute, but they quickly made it clear how they felt about me.
I’ve never seen Pronghorns before so I was very excited to see lots of them during a recent trip through Montana towards Yellowstone National Park. Although this female was initially very surprised to find us watching her, she actually posed for a few pictures before sauntering across the road.
I’ve got lots of images from the Yellowstone trip to wade through, so this is just the first of many more to come!
Sometimes you get the shot you want, sometimes you get the butt!
I was doing some work in the garden (I have a plot in a farm field on the prairies East of Calgary) when I noticed a young coyote saunter across the field and duck behind the barn. I immediately grabbed my camera and trotted over to the barn, hoping to find the coyote hanging out behind it. Sure enough it wasn’t far away, but unfortunately we saw each other at the same time. Coyote’s are almost always wary animals and this one was no exception. It immediately turned and ran away. I managed to fire off a couple of shots, but this side of the animal wasn’t quite what I was hoping to see.
